About Universal Credit

Universal Credit is a monthly payment to help with living costs. It replaced six older benefits: Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, and Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.

Who Can Claim

You may be able to claim Universal Credit if you're on a low income or out of work, you're 18 or over (some exceptions apply), you're under State Pension age, and you have less than £16,000 in savings.

UC Elements

  • Standard allowance - based on age and whether you have a partner
  • Child element - for each child you're responsible for
  • Housing costs element - help with rent if you're a renter
  • Childcare costs element - up to 85% of childcare costs
  • Carer element - if you care for someone 35+ hours per week
  • LCWRA element - if you have limited capability for work

Work Allowance

If you have children, have limited capability for work, or are a carer, you can earn a certain amount before your UC is reduced. This is called the work allowance. Your UC then reduces by 55p for every £1 you earn above the work allowance.
